5 ways to get faster at Photoshop

As users become more accustomed to working with Photoshop, they inevitably desire to develop a faster workflow. Faster work can come with many benefits including making more money and having more time to explore and play with Photoshop. Keyboard shortcuts, layer management, dialogue box management, and selection techniques can help make you work faster and more efficiently in Photoshop.

  1. Keyboard shortcuts are an easy way to immediately increase your speed and workflow. There are many standard shortcuts, and you can edit them and create your own. These shortcuts can help with file management, access different tools, filters, and panels, layer management, opacity adjustments and much more.
  2. Hiding layer effects is one easy strategy to make Photoshop work faster for you. If you’re working with a lot of layer effects or layers it can take a lot of power to display everything and consequently slow Photoshop down. Right clicking on any layer effect and selecting ‘Hide all effects’ will temporarily hide all layer effects in the document. This easy step will help Photoshop run faster.
  3. Layer masks can be used to quickly show or hide part of a photo. By creating a mask and selecting part of a photo and filling the selection with black, that part of the photo will no longer be visible and the layer below will show through. For example if you have two identical photos, one with the foreground in focus and one with the background in focus, using layer masks would hide the unfocused background and reveal the focused background on the layer behind.
  4. Dialogue box management is a good and simple tool to use. By simply saving settings you can work much faster. For example, if you are adjusting the curves on a photo, save the settings before clicking OK. This will allow you to go back and make slight adjustments to the curve settings and avoid further degrading the image.
  5. There are many different strategies for making selections in Photoshop. Knowing the right method for your needs can help improve workflow and reduce frustration. Find an excellent Photoshop selection tutorial here.
