Battlestar Galactica Death Certificate & Basestar Font

Battlestar Galactica Death Certificate

David Occhino of davidocchino.com released his April font, Basestar, early and just in time for the final episode of Battlestar Galactica. I’m a big BSG fan. I thought it was cool when I was a kid even though the effects didn’t match what I had seen in Star Wars a year earlier (1977).
The current version of Battlestar Galactica is more adult, bloody and suited to my age (whatever that is).

David’s new Basestar, Battlestar Galactica font, is right on the money. As far as I can tell it hits the Battlestar Galactica logo font square on. Actually after playing with it a bit it might even be better. David goes out of his way to make his fonts much more than a copy. They are fine fonts in their own right and Basestar is no exception.

With Basestar in hand I couldn’t resist making my own piece of BSG memorabilia. I decided a death certificate seemed appropriate since the last episode is upon us. I had a great time creating it. David’s fonts made the Galactica name part easy. The base art is an old certificate from iStock.com. I created all the text elements and found more free blood splatter brushes that I could use. Basestar is a good deal. It comes in three versions that can be used together to create a BSG like logo. David even offers a great, detailed, tutorial showing how to create your own BSG looking logo. Other important details for a professional appearance have been considered as well like complete punctuation and careful spacing and kerning. All Occhino fonts come with the same attention to quality and detail. Make sure and check out other recent releases Nautilus (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea font), Emblem (car font), TradeWind (pirate font) and Hocus Pocus (Harry Potter font).

If you need a little sci-fi look check out Basestar and possibly a few blood splatters.

Do font designers like David

Do font designers like David have to worry about copyright infringement when creating a font that looks so similar to a font used in a tv show etc?

That's a good question. I

That's a good question. I have exchanged comments with David about the fact that fonts are considered by many "Software" vs. art. I think it would be better for David to answer this question. I'll ask him to make a post.

Kim, the answer is "yes:"

Kim, the answer is "yes:" whenever a designer creates anything that is a derivative work they need to be aware of the laws that are in place to protect the original work, and the laws that are in place to allow for derivative works to be created.

Copyright laws varies between nations and in the United States scalable font software can be copyrighted, as can the name of the scalable font, but the letters of the alphabet cannot be.

This webpage a good overview that you might be interested to read: http://www.typeright.org/ethicsguide.html#IIIB5 and on this page it outlines some of the ethical and legal issues that type designers need to be aware of. I hope this information is helpful to you.

Thanks for finding this

Thanks for finding this font; it looks great! I'm wondering, though - in your death certificate, what font did you use for the "Return of a Death" and "Battlestar" lines? I've been looking for the font the show used in their credits and other title screens; it looks like you nailed that one as well.
