Deke McClelland asked this question on his blog today, “Let's say you wanted to learn about Photoshop, or the larger world of digital photography, or the larger world of design graphics, or the larger world of Adobe's Creative Suite. What kind of conference would you, yes you, attend?” Deke goes on to say what we have today in Photoshop conferences is analogous to to the world class Ringling Bros. But Deke wants ideas for what a future Cirque du Soleil level conference would be.
It’s exciting that Deke is thinking about this because he’s world class when it comes to Photoshop (Indesign too) and training. So Deke’s been reading my mind. I've decided not to attend Photoshop World in Vegas next month for various reasons which I won't go into here.
Since he asked, here's a few starter ideas:
- Don’t limit it to people who can actually get to the location (come on, we’ve all got broadband don’t we?). Who cares if it costs a couple of bucks to participate (Deke, if you can’t figure out how to make money with this idea call me). I made this suggestion three weeks ago on another blog.
- The Ringling Bros. style conference is focused on photography and using Photoshop from a photographer’s perspective. The Cirque du Soleil conference is about breaking the boundaries of what we expect. In Cirque’s “O” the floor of the performing stage is no longer a solid. Creativity as a daily activity can involve the entire Creative Suite and beyond. I think Adobe’s marketing concept is about the integration of their creative suite. Right? How about a conference class on how to enhance a photo in Illustrator? (does that even make sense?!?!?!).
- Ringling Bros. presents the show to people in their seats. Cirque du Soleil surrounds the audience (each audience member in “LOVE” gets their own sound system built into their seat). Presenters at the Cirque conference interact more with the audience instead of sitting at an elevated table in the front of the room. At the Cirque, for example, a conference participant e-mails Deke a image file and asks Deke what to do with it. Deke promptly trashes it and says crap in crap out and asks for another challenge. All of this is live and unrehearsed.
Ok, I’m stopping at three because I need to go learn some new Creative Suite stuff and make some money.
P.S. If you use any of these ideas I get free pass to the first event.

Roger, A couple of points
Roger,
A couple of points that may interest you:
(1.) As far as Photoshop-Illustrator integration, the importance of using Illustrator for working with Open-type fonts is critical. Illustrator's Open-Type pallettes offer much more than what is available in Photoshop. So, I think of Illustrator as an "Open-Type Processor" for Photoshop (I learned this from Russell Brown's videos).
(2.) As to editing a photo in Illustrator, Live Trace offers many interesting possibilities.
FWIW, that's my 2 bits.
peace out,
Thomas

Thanks for the comments!
Live trace is very cool (that functionality used to be a less powerful stand alone program from Adobe called Streamline). Check out Deke's latest podcast (called a Dekepod) for a cool way to edit an image in Illustrator: http://www.deke.com/content/stretching-a-photo-illustrator
Please post a link to the Russell Brown video it it's online. If not tell me where to get it.
Yea Brown has his own
Yea Brown has his own blog/website where you'll find all of his tutorials & hes on adobes site too. Just give him a google. Er, here ya go http://www.russellbrown.com/
Hmm, interesting idea: Russell Brown + Ringling Bros or Cirque. Especially with that wig of his. He's tamed Photoshop so I'm sure he'd have no probs with elephants & lions too.
Interesting idea you have about different ways to present PS training. For me Vegas doesn't work out for a couple of reasons, for one I'm an instructor and well, um, that time of year = back to school we go.
Yep, I think Adobe does realize their marketing potential would improve if we knew how to fiddle with our photos in other programs such as Illustrator, Dreamweaver as well as PS. Was great of Deke to venture into that territory the other day on his blog. Especially as an instructor its great to know what all of our image editing options are, or more of them anyway.
My nephew finished a tour with Ringling & now he's with Cirque.
Keith, Thanks for the
Keith, Thanks for the Russell Brown link. I’ve been there before. Sounds like your nephew has an interesting life.
