Photoshop CS4 – but don’t DIGG . . . I might just get in trouble!!

First of all let me tell you right up front that I may not be able to write on this subject again, and before you ask, read through to the end for my final prediction! So here goes . . .

I received an interesting e-mail yesterday. It was from the Adobe Partner Connection and I received it specifically because I am member of the Adobe Partner Connection. The memo said this, “You are invited to join us for a special Partner Connection briefing on the next release of Adobe Creative Suite.” WOW! According to this memo the briefing is scheduled for next week. So, my feeling is that Adobe may be closer than I had imagined to releasing the next version of Photoshop (Photoshop CS4, or whatever it will be called).

So why can’t I speak of this again? Well, it turns out that as an Adobe Partner Connection member, I’ve agreed not to disclose information that Adobe may deem confidential.  I may or may not join the web-based session next week; I haven’t decided yet. If I do join the session, however, there’s a good chance that you will not be reading anything about the next version of Photoshop until it’s officially announced by Adobe. That may be fine, well and good for the folks who follow your CampPhotoshop.com Head Camp Counselor, but it’s going to pain me mightily to not be able to share with you what I hear during this briefing. But just wait, this situation might only be for the next 45 days . . . keep reading!

So, since I might be restricted in what I can say to you all going forward, I wanted to tell you what my intuition tells me while I am able. I believe that the next version of Photoshop will be announced and made available as a beta at Photoshop World in Las Vegas on September 4th.  This would make sense, given the announcement and release of the Lightroom 2 beta at the last Photoshop World.  I can already imagine the scene in the Mandalay Bay Conference Center -- Johnny L will take the stage and make the announcement to an Adobe-friendly crowd that will scream with Photoshop geek excitement and glee!  So that’s my prediction. See you in Vegas -- where what happens at Photoshop World will leave Photoshop World at the speed of light! And hopefully I’ll be able to write all about it.

Interesting article... now

Interesting article... now I'm intrigued.

I agree from what I've heard

I agree from what I've heard the cycle on PS CS3 will be shortened. The Adobe people are training right now on Lightroom 2 and as I understand it this will shortly require a PS upgrade for complete compatibility. I went through a course the other day on Aperture in order to be conversant with a client that uses it. I was pretty amazed at some of it's capabilities as compare to the current Lightroom release. Yes, I haver the LR beta as well and can see Adobe is answering.
As LR becomes more and more capable I find myself using photoshop less and less.

Good post, good luck with the confidentiality police!

Sounds like interesting news

Sounds like interesting news but I'm not ready for an upgrade.

Mark, Thanks for your

Mark, Thanks for your comments. I've got 1.5 of Aperture. I found it painfully slow on my system. I'm really enjoying working with the Lightroom beta.

Yaaaaaaaaayyy CS4! CS3 has

Yaaaaaaaaayyy CS4! CS3 has made life so much easier for me... how in the world are they gonna top CS3? unless they merge photoshop and illustrator. And Indesign with Illustrator&photoshop!

Don't forget that the price

Don't forget that the price quoted is for CS4 Extended, CS4 Standard will be considerably less and to be honest is all the majority of Photographers, Professionals included will ever need.
